Castel
Pietraio farm is situated in the commune of Monteriggioni
in the Sienese Hills area. Its 158 hectares are divided among
vineyards, olive groves, corn and sunflowers fields, meadows
and woods, respecting the natural features of the ground.
Its particular climatic conditions, its position on the hills
and its favourable exposure, make Castel Pietraio a farm with
an excellent vocation to quality wine-growing. Since 1995
an investment plan has started in order to improve the product.
The new vineyards have been planted with a bigger number of
plants per hectare, low productivity rootstock and autochthonous
clones, believing that great wines are obtained first of all
in vineyards with low production per understock. To be sure
to get a good product, a few elements are fundamental: the
nature of ground, its exposure, natural soil, from manuring
to spring green manure, and the employ of the most modern
agronomic techniques which allow a strong reduction in the
use of plant protection products, in order to create a produce
which is more respectful of the environment and of the consumer's
health. Summer thinning out lets to improve the quality of
the grapes to harvest, while defoliation allows a better exposure
of the bunch to the sun, to favour sugar development. The
cellar is a point of pride: it is equipped with the best and
most modern facilities for wine-making from own grapes only,
besides of the barriques of allier for ageing.
